I’ve lived in Southsea for the past six years and each year I love it a little more. However, I don’t think my home seaside town gets the positive press it deserves. That’s why I’ve decided to talk about my top five favourite things about Southsea.
In at number five we’ve got the shops. Now, we all know about the likes of the Brighton Lanes. Don’t get me wrong, I do love them too. However, in Southsea not only do we have a great mix of high street names on Palmerston Road but we also have a range of quirky boutiques on Albert Road – not to mention the fact you’re just a five minute walk from a whole host of designer labels in Gunwharf.
Fab at four we’ve got food. Okay, so I’m not saying we are the first seaside town to have food, but our eats are pretty special. For burgers, you won’t find better than Palmerston Road’s Meat and Barrel. Or if fish is more your thing then head to Nara for super sushi with super customer service. We’ve also got Tenth Hole and Garage Lounge for deliciously indulgent cakes. And if you’re looking for vegan treats, Wild Thyme has got your back.
In at three, Southsea is the place to party. Whether you fancy a glass of wine with friends at the Wine Vaults, a sophisticated gin at Gin and Olive or throwing some shapes on the Drift dance floor, Southsea has the venue for you. And if you want you can skip the venue altogether and take to the beach for your very own party under the stars.
In at two, you’re never too old for the fair. Along with all your old fair favourites, like the 2p machine and waltzers, Clarence Pier also recently introduced its very own ferris wheel. It’s our answer to the London Eye – without the London price tag. This funky ride is definitely the best way to see the sights of Southsea from a bird’s eye view.
And hitting the top spot at number one there is always something going on at Southsea. This year’s big music festival, Victorious, attracted record high numbers and the weekly gigs at the bandstand provided thousands with fun free entertainment. Meanwhile, events such as the open air cinemas, gin, beer and food festivals ensured there was never a dull moment at this fabulous seaside town.
