The sassy Sister Act enjoyed a welcome second coming at Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre this week. With hilarious quips, booming songs and a hell of a lot of nuns (slight oxymoron there but you get the idea!) this West End and Broadway hit, once again doesn’t disappoint.
Pop star and X Factor winner, Alexandra Burke stars as Deloris Van Cartier, delivering a stela performance as a disguised nun, hidden in protective custody in a convent after witnessing a murder.
Unfortunately, however, the Mother Superior has her doubts as to whether Deloris will ever become a true sister. But, when her singing talents and infectious personality enable her to transform the convent’s choir into something worthy of Simon Cowell, she discovers she has more in common with them than she ever thought possible.
Stand out performances come from Little Sister Mary Robert, played by Alice Stokoe, belting out surprisingly strong notes. The performance throughout is also given an added edge with many of the cast able to play the saxophone, trumpet or percussion as well as they can sing and act.
The show’s set, filled with giant glitter balls and a near ticker-tape parade at the end all add to the atmosphere.
There was a well-deserved standing ovation, cheers and a few tears at the end of this very special show.
With all the camp, glitz and glamour, audiences will not be surprised to see in the program that Strictly’s villain judge, Craig Revel Horwood is the Director and Choreographer.
Catch the show before it goes on June 17.
