REVIEW: My first microdermabrasion experience

Best-Microdermabrasion-KitsThis week I turned 30…so as well as drinking copious amounts of alcohol, celebrating way too much and wondering where did my twenties actually go, I decided it was finally about time I started looking after my skin. And what better way than with a microdermabrasion Facial that promises to not only calm to the skin, neaturalise bacteria but also reduce the signs of ageing.

So, what is a microdermabrasion facial?

Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical facial resurfacing technique that mechanically exfoliates the outermost layer of dead skin cells and vacuums them away, leaving your skin feeling softer and smoother — and if done well, looking younger and more vibrant.

How does it work?

By removing the outermost layer of dead skin the body has a minor freak-out, interpreting it as an injury. It then quickly replaces the lost skin cells with new, healthy ones.

Things you should know before the treatment

Unlike other facials or skin treatments microdermabrasion is non-invasive and recovery time is as little as one or two days.

This means can have the treatment done during your lunch hour and go straight back to work looking pretty good for someone who has just had their skin cells vacuumed off their face!

My treatment

I visited PureSun health and beauty for my microdermabrasion treatment where it costs £33. The treatment began with the therapist reassuring me that the procedure will be gentle enough for my sensitive skin while providing strong results. She then removed my base makeup before starting with the 15 minutes of exfoliation. Although strange, the feeling of the treatment was completely painless and immensely soothing. As she moved down towards my jaw line and onto my neck, the sensation became a bit ticklish, but manageable. My therapist then changed the head to one used for massaging the mask into my skin. Each half of the mask was pressed into my face and the therapist meticulously worked the product in. As the mask set, I was given an option of a relaxing head, hand or foot massage – I went for a head massage.

10 blissful minutes later, the therapist removed the mask before adding a layer of sunscreen to my face.

After the treatment my face felt as though it had a drink of water, soft and new. The therapist warned me redness and sensitivity may follow treatment and recommended I skipped makeup and harsh skincare for 24 hours. I was pleased to find that the redness only lasted two hours and after a few hours, my skin already looked smooth and radiant, perfect for a light base in the heat.

PureSun advised getting the facial every two months, which I will happily do to ensure I maintain a clear base.
