Cats…a purrfect night out

This August saw one of the country’s favourite musicals, Cats return to Southampton’s Mayflower theatre.

Now more than three decades since the show’s original launch, Cats proved to be just as popular as it was on its first performance on the West End back in 1981.

Combining the classic story with a fresh fun cast, the nationwide UK tour of the famous musical, lives up to expectations, entertaining both new and old fans of the show.

For those unaware of the infamous tale (no pun intended) Cats tells the story of the Jellicle tribe on the night of the Jellicle moon, whereby the leader of the tribe will select one cat to be reborn to a new Jellicle life. Unlike previous productions, there are no ‘big name stars’ in this current tour, however this hasn’t affected the show’s popularity, with almost all tickets being sold.

Standout performances include those of Marcquelle Ward, whose updated role as Rum Tum Tugger, sees an urban interpretation of the character delivering a rap in the first half of the performance. Though this may not have proved popular with traditionalists, or die-hard fans of the musical, it provides a fresh look for new audiences of a musical which can be incredibly dark at times. Special mentions must also go to Shiv Rabheru who’s performance as Mistoffelees proved to be a highlight of the night; not only does Rabheru undoubtedly have the best costume of the entire cast (bedecked almost entirely in diamantes), he is also a highly talented and effervescent dancer.

All in all Cats proved to be a purrfect night out for the whole family. To stay up to date with other upcoming shows at the Mayflower Theatre visit https://www.mayflower.org.uk/
